What You Always Wanted To Know About Hojojutsu

Some facts

Hoshu hojojutsu (捕手捕縄術) has been part of the 18 general martial arts (bugei juhappan, 武芸十八般) of the samurai.

In the Sengoku period (戦国時代) and earlier, when Japan was in political turmoil and not yet united under one government (pre-Edo periods), it was a noble duty for members of the warrior class to bring honor to their name by taking prisoners on the battlefield. Together with the other martial arts the art of capturing (hobakujutsu, 捕縛術) and immobilizing/restraining (hojojutsu aka torinawajutsu, 捕縄術) with rope was intensively trained.

The workshop

The illustrations (above) are showing finished ties. With a willing rope partner (ukete, 受け手) any person with very basic rope skills could probably copy these. However, in a real life-and-death situation you would first have to defeat your opponent.

What we will learn in this workshop is how to apply these ties authentically – by first flushing out resistance.

Martial arts expert and renowned kinbaku grandmaster Yagami Ren (鵺神蓮) will reveal the secrets of this ancient martial art from a practical perspective as well as from a scholarly point of view.
