Living History.
Ok. Vikings.

For me, the Viking Era is a fascinating time. The travel, colonization, trade, daily life, and of course, the raids are an amazing time period in our human history. I study it as a hobby. I also go to museums and teach people about food in the early Scandinavian middle ages. I stay away from mittlealter markets and have nothing to do with LARP. I work only from archeological finds. I am interested in the history, not the fantasy. I have nothing against people who have an interest in role playing. Don't get me wrong. I just do me, at all times. Do you!

Staying in the museums at night is a truly amazing experience. The buildings, the stars, the songs and stories. With everything historically accurate. It really does feel like time traveling.

I will post some pictures in the next couple days. I would like to ask if it's ok for me to post pictures from my last projects in Haithabu? I butchered a pig in a manner consistent with the archeological record. I also baked blood bread in the oven.

The ingredients are based on archeological finds. The bread is based on a find from Birka. A wild sourdough was used as a levener. The grain was ground on a stone mill in the museum. Instead of water, whey from cheese making was used. So its a huge challenge!

I have just recently found this, which explains why it actually makes sense to use blood as an ingredient.

I have the belief that blood was added to bread to make use of it. When an animal was slaughtered, everything was used. Livestock is a expensive resource, and meat was a rare treat in the old days. It could have been the difference between life and death. Life was much much much harder then.
